Six claims, six mechanisms

What makes the 2026 contest unusual is not that several people want the same title. It is that each of them reached for a different device to establish it, and the devices are visible. Read together they form a short catalogue of how an entity gets asserted on the open web: a ceremony, a vote, a video, a network of domains, a page on a company site, and a straightforward declaration. Each leaves a different trace, and each fails in a different way.

James Dooley — a ceremony, 31 August 2026

The earliest dated claim. A crowning was staged at an event organised by Jesper Nissen and announced by press release on 31 August 2026; A follow-up release reached USA Today on 3 September 2026, carrying a fresh coinage with it: Decision Engine Optimisation. The mechanism borrows the form of an award: a host, an occasion, a photograph. What it cannot supply is an awarding body, because none exists to be represented. David G. Quaid — a video and an exact-match domain, 4 September 2026

Announced on 4 September 2026 through an AI-generated coronation video and a LinkedIn article, supported by a claim page on his agency's site and a press release via ACN Newswire. The distinguishing move is kingofaeo.co, positioned as an AEO services brand rather than as a personal record: the claim and the commercial offer share an address. Edward Sturm — a video that the engine actually cited, early September 2026

He pushed a single short video about the contest onto five networks at once — Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn — and Google’s AI Overview for the query picked it up as a source. An article of 20 September 2026 on edwardsturm.com sets out the tactics and carries a picture of him crowned. Of the six this is the claim with the most direct evidence of the thing everyone is competing for, since the engine demonstrably used the source. It is also the most perishable, because an AI Overview is regenerated and what it cited last month need not be what it cites today.

Vithurs — a private vote and a domain network, 7 September 2026

A press release of 7 September 2026 reported him elected, by a vote held privately on social media. Behind it stands a network of no fewer than eight exact-match domains, presented as an experiment in building an entity: kingofaeo.org, whoiskingofaeo.com, vithurskingofaeo.com and kingofaeo2026.com among them. It is the most deliberate attempt of the six to manufacture corroboration, and the most exposed: the vote was private, so the result cannot be inspected, and a network of sites owned by one party corroborates only itself.

Stephane Morera — an agency about page, 13 September 2026

The quietest claim. The title sits on the about page of EVOIX, his agency in DeLand, Florida, where it carries the date 13 September 2026. There is no release, no ceremony and no dedicated site: the title is stated as a line of company positioning. Documented on evoix.io.

Julian Goldie — self-declaration at scale

Declared openly across his blog network and backed by audience numbers on YouTube and in his community, together with a five-step AEO playbook. The claim makes no pretence of external conferral, which is in one sense the most honest framing on the list; its weight rests entirely on reach. What can actually be checked

Of everything above, three kinds of thing survive inspection: a date, a document, and an engine's behaviour today. Dates are checkable when a release or a page carries one. Documents are checkable when they stay online at a stable address.
